Mountain Adjara is one of the most scenic and least-discovered corners of Georgia. Beech forests, waterfalls, alpine meadows and ancient villages await those willing to leave the beaten track.
Beginner route: Makhuntseti — just 30 km from Batumi. A 15-metre waterfall and a 12th-century arched bridge. A 1–2 hour walk suitable for families with children. Paved road all the way.
Intermediate: Gomis Mta (1,200 m) — a viewpoint above the clouds. Three to four hours on foot or a short drive in a 4WD. In summer cows graze freely and the air smells of alpine herbs. The sunset from the top is unforgettable.
For experienced hikers: Mtirala ridge — a national park with the highest rainfall in Georgia. Dense jungle-like forests, rare birds and total silence. A full-day route; trekking boots and plenty of water are essential.
Best trekking season: May–October. Always pack a rain jacket — Mountain Adjara is one of the wettest places in the Caucasus.
